  18. <p>     Elton John is to Israel what Mickey Rourke is to France: a foreign
  19. star adored for reasons that aren't intuitively obvious. When
  20. the singer backed out of a Tel Aviv concert-an event so significant
  21. a local high school canceled its graduation festivities-the
  22. country went into a collective furor. Elton flew back to London
  23. after his entourage was denied VIP treatment at the airport,
  24. and there was a scuffle involving his bodyguard and some fans
  25. and photographers. He did return to perform the next day. But
  26. the love fest is waning. Advised an Israeli newspaper: "Look
  27. for a banana republic that will salute you."
